A guy rings tech support to report that his computer is faulty.
Tech: What’s the problem?
User: There is smoke coming out of the power supply.
Tech: You’ll need a new power supply.
User: No, I don’t! I just need to change the startup files.
Tech: Sir, the power supply is faulty. You’ll need to replace it.
User: No way! Someone told me that I just needed to change the startup files and it will fix the problem! All I need is for you to tell me the command.
Ten minutes later, the user is still persistent that he is right. The tech is frustrated and give up.
Tech: Sorry, Sir. We don’t normally tell our customers this, but there is an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem.
User: I knew it!
Tech: Just add the line LOAD NOSMOKE.COM at the end of the CONFIG.SYS. Let me know how it goes.
Ten minutes later.
User: It didn’t work. The power supply is still smoking.
Tech: Well, what version of DOS are you using?
User: MS-DOS 6.22.
Tech: That’s your problem there. That version of DOS didn’t come with NOSMOKE. Contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch that will give you the file. Let me know how it goes.
One hour later:
User: I need a new power supply.
Tech: How did you come to that conclusion?
User: Well, I rang Microsoft and told him about what you said, and he started asking questions about the make of power supply.
Tech: Then what did he say?
User: He told me that my power supply isn’t compatible with NOSMOKE.

*kicher* Ich hatte meine gute Tat heute noch nicht…
Ein Herr ruft bei der Hotline an, da sein Computer kaputt ist:
Hotline: Guten Tag, wo ist Ihr Problem?
User: Mein Netzteil qualmt.
Hotline: Dann brauchen Sie ein neues Netzteil.
User: Nein, nein. Ich muß nur die richtigen Bootdateien haben.
Hotline: Mein Herr, Ihr Netzteil ist kaputt. Sie werden es austauschen müssen.
User: Nein, das stimmt nicht! Irgendjemand sagte mir, daß ich nur die Bootdateien ändern muß und das Problem dann gelöst ist! Ich brauche nur die richtigen Kommandos von Ihnen.
Zehn Minuten später besteht der User immer noch darauf. Der
Techniker ist frustriert und will aufgeben.
Hotline: Tut mir leid, mein Herr. Normalerweise dürfen wir das unseren Kunden nicht verraten, aber es gibt ein undokumentiertes DOS-Kommando, das das Problem löst.
User: Wußt’ ich’s doch!
Hotline: Fügen Sie nur die Zeile LOAD NOSMOKE.COM am Ende der CONFIG.SYS ein. Und halten Sie mich bitte auf dem Laufenden, ob das funktioniert.
Zehn Minuten später:
User: Das hat nicht funktioniert. Das Netzteil qualmt immer noch.
Hotline: Welche DOS-Version verwenden Sie denn?
User: MS-DOS 6.22.
Hotline: Dann liegt hier Ihr Problem. Diese Version von DOS hat die Zusatzfunktion NOSMOKE nicht. Fragen Sie bei Microsoft nach einem Patch, das diese Datei enthält. Und, halten Sie mich bitte auf dem Laufenden.
Eine Stunde später:
User: Ich brauche ein neues Netzteil.
Hotline: Wie kommen Sie jetzt darauf?
User: Ich habe bei Microsoft angerufen und Ihnen gesagt, was Sie mir erklärt haben und er fragte mich nach dem Hersteller des Netzteils.
Hotline: Und was meinte er dann?
User: Er sagte, daß mein Netzteil mit NOSMOKE nicht kompatibel ist.
