Woher kommt das Wort „Kotflügel“?
Kot ist Dreck, Schmutz, Abfall etc.
Dieser soll vom Fahrzeug, egal ob Kutsche, Fahrrad oder Auto ferngehalten werden.
Flügel heißt das Stück Blech, weil es in seinen ersten Formen an einen Vogelflügel erinnert.
Nichts Ungewöhnliches!

tatsächlich wurde der Kotflügel entwickelt, als es noch Pferdefuhrwerke gab und vor dem Kot schützen sollte.

‚Kot‘ ist tatsächlich Dreck an sich - ‚mudguard‘ in englisch, beim Fahrrad im deutschen, eh, wie gleich noch??
Mit dem englischen ‚dashboard‘ ist es ähnlich:
‚The dashboard was originally the mudguard on a horse-drawn carriage and the word was adopted to apply to the panel in front of the earliest car drivers. The term ‚dash‘ used to carry the meaning ‚to splatter‘ or ‚to splash‘ but this is now obsolete.‘
