1642-1644 Blaise Pascal developed mechanical device for addition and subtraction.
1673 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz surpassed Pascal’s machine with one which could also multiply and divide.
1820’s Charles Babbage attempted to develop a mechanical Difference Engine which worked partially but was never completed. He also attempted an Analytical Engine. Lady Ada Lovelace was his sponsor and probably the first programmer.
