seit Jahren treibt mich die Frage um, was die Abkürzung GI für die Amerikanischen Soldaten wohl ausgeschrieben bedeuten könnte. Kann mir jemand helfen?

die Abkürzung GI stand früher auf Gegenständen aus Metall (galvanized iron), z.B. Mülleimern, in Behörden. Es verbreitete sich der Irrglaube, die Abkürzung stünde für „government issued“ (Eigentum der Regierung). So wurde diese Abkürzung dann auf die Soldaten übertragen.

Entweder:
· GI (engl. in Einzelbuchstaben ausgesprochen) ist eine Bezeichnung für US-amerikanische Soldaten vornehmlich des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Die Abkürzung wird aber bis heute verwendet. Ihr Ursprung liegt im Dunkeln, daher gibt es verschiedene Interpretationen:
„Government Issue“ (frei übersetzt Regierungseigentum) stand auf so ziemlich jeder Munitionstasche der US Armee, aber auch auf dem Seesack jedes Soldaten bei der Grundausbildung.
„Galvanized Iron“ (galvanisiertes, z.B. verzinktes Eisen)
„General Inductee“, also Wehrpflichtiger, Bezeichnung aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg.
„General Infantrist“ (gewöhnlicher Fußsoldat) bzw. „General Infantry“
Hingegen ist eher unwahrscheinlich, dass es sich um eine Abkürzung für „German Invaders“ handelt.
