„another“ wir, so sagt man mir, wird immer zusammen geschrieben (oder zusammengeschrieben?). Nach meinem Sprachgefühl ist mit another so etwas wie „noch ein“ oder „ein weiterer“ verbunden, aber nicht, wie im Deutschen, „ein Anderer“.
Wenn ich also nun schreiben will: „Another helping hand“ ist das klar: Noch ein Helfer. Aber „Ein anderer Lehrer kann das nicht“ - „Another teacher won’t do the job“? Ich verstehe das als „noch ein Lehrer wird nicht reichen“. „A different teacher won’t do the job“? Klingt unglücklich. „The other teacher didn’t do the job“ geht doch auch!
Ist „an other“ in zwei Worten vielleicht doch zulässig?

As an English teacher, I can’t think of any situation where ‚an other‘ would be correct. You are correct in saying that it means ‚noch ein‘ or ‚ein weiterer‘.
As for ‚Ein anderer Lehrer kann das nicht‘, I’d translate it as ‚a different teacher can’t do it‘. ‚Another teacher won’t do the job‘ as ‚ein weiterer Lehrer will das nicht‘.
