Chris Rea live at Cologne -
vast hall and empty, early still,
dreams of having you all to my own,
but it rained, then poured and did fill.
I stood too rapt to even applaude,
cynicism abandoned to drink it all in,
to put it away and keep it stored,
time seemed to have changed it’s spin.
Wond’ring how writing might be for him,
no groping for words that won’t fit?
No waste paper basket full to the brim,
no desperate, heartfelt 'Oh sh..!"?
It hurt to know time wouldn’t stop,
as it hurt to have you so near,
and why had I not volunteered for the job
say - of sitting backstage and guarding the beer?
You raised your hand for a final salute,
to wake up seemed a long, long fall.
Outside the world was stale and mute
and the night held no magic at all.

Wer weit weg von seiner Liebe, seiner Familie oder einer Heimat gearbeitet oder gelebt hat, hat vermutlich die ein oder andere Träne vor und auf dem Weg nach Hause zum gemeinsamen Weihnachtsfest verdrückt, wenn “Driving Home vor Christmas” im Radio lief.
Noch heute geht es mir so, wenn ich an Zeiten denke, zu denen es hunderte Kilometer mit dem Auto, dem Zug oder Flieger waren, und ich bei schlechtem Wetter hoffte, dass der Flughafen doch wieder Starts erlauben oder der Stau sich endlich auflösen würde, während ich durch Regen oder Schnee Richtung Heimat schlich.
Zu welcher Zeit, wenn nicht kurz vor Weihnachten, hätte Chris Rea seine letzte Reise antreten können?

ja.. seinen Tod hat mich auch berührt.. ich mag seine Songs.. on the Beach ist ein toller Song mit viel Atmosphäre, das zeichnet viele seiner Stücke aus..
Und „drivin’ home…“ ein Weihnachtsklassiker, den ich gern mag…
