Hallo Finus, bin zwar kein Muttersprachler, aber dafür reicht’s hoffentlich noch:

Persönliche Beziehungen sind selten immun gegen die Konflikte, die die Gesellschaft zerreißen.

(Kann es sein, dass vor „society“ ein „the“ fehlt? denn so müßte es eigentlich „societies“ heißen und dann wäre die Übersetzung: … die Gesellschaften zerreißen)

  • is the noun generic? I doubt this in the above sentence. As far as my understanding of English goes at least an indefinite article should precede it („a society“) if „society“ refers to „societies in general“.
  • is the noun modified by this/that/these/those/some/any/each/every/no/none/my/mine ? in this case the article should be omitted, indeed, but this is not the case.
  • is the noun unspecified or definite? The general rule states that the first mention of a noun is indefinite and all subsequent references to this noun are definite and take the.
  • Or is it a collective noun? Definitely not.

But, of course, I could be totally off the track :smile: If so, I’d gratefully accept any better argument.
