‚The picture‘ ist, streng genommen das physische Etwas was man anfassen, an die Wand hängen oder in’s Album kleben kann.‚The image‘ ist das was auf dem ‚p.‘ zu sehen ist. Im Französischen ist z.B. ‚tableau‘ das Gemälde, und ‚image‘ das was drauf ist.
Gestern erst hörte ich in einer Vorlesung an der LMU München, im Deutschen gäbe es diese Unterscheidung nicht, weil ‚Bild‘ sowohl als realer als auch als abstrakter Begriff verwendet werde. Dem kann ich nicht ganz zustimmen, weil man für den abstrakten Teil die begriffe ‚Darstellung und Bildnis‘ gebrauchen kann. Also z.B. ‚Ein Gemälde mit der Darstellung …‘ oder ‚Ein Aquarell mit dem Bildnis …‘

native speakers können dazu mehr und besseres sagen als:
image von imago = etwas Abgebildetes, Vorgestelltes - potentiell abstrakt
picture von pictum = etwas Gemaltes - konkret
Es gibt Überschneidungen wie image für eine Plastik, die zwar konkret ist, aber dreidimensional.

Hallo Experten, besten Dank,
ich würde demnach das Bild, das beispielsweise digital versandt wird oder auf einer website zu sehen ist als bezeichnen, hier ist man sich nicht wirklich einig unter den native spekers, aber ich hoffe, man versteht’s … 
)
