- Summary
The book “Thirteen Reasons Why” is about the girl Hannah Baker and her classmate and crush Clay Jensen.
One day when Clay Jensen comes home from school he finds a mysterious box with his name on it on his porch. The box has no return address. When Clay opens the box he finds seven cassettetapes recorded by Hannah Baker. Two weeks before Hannah commits suicide she records thirteen reasons why she decides to end her life. These thirteen reasons are thirteen people and Clay is one of them.
One whole night Clay spends to listen to the tapes and to find out what happens with Hannah. A few weeks before he also gets a anonymous map. On this map of the town where Hannah and Clay live are several points. Each point belongs to a new story and so also to one of the thirteen persons. While Clay listens to the tapes he visits the places from the map.
Hannahs story begins with her first kiss in the Eisenhowerpark. After the kiss the boy put some rumours about Hannah, for example that he touches her breast. Then a past friend publishes a “Who is hot / Who is not” list and Hannah was the “Best Ass”. Thereon a boy grabs her ass in a pub to see if it is right. It follows that her friend Jessica breaks off their friendship because she thinks Hannah has a romance with her crush. After that a Peeping Tom observes her in her bedroom and takes pictures of her. Hannah begins to suffer because she looses her friends and her privacy get violate. Again and again she trusts the people and gets disappointed.
Her story goes on with a girl who only uses her to polishing up her image and her Valentine Marcus who paws her at a diner. She can’t defend herself and noone at the diner helps her. Then in “Peer Communication” her favourite class her privacy get violated again. In that class the students discuss problems and have paperbags where other students can leave them notes. At that time Hanna is hard up. She needs the notes to get the hope that she can trust the people but a boy steals the notes.
Hannah begins to write down her problems in poems. She trusts a boy and shows them to him. Without her permission he publishes the poems in the whole school and the teachers analyse them with the students in class.
Then it’s Clays turn but Hannah explains that he is only on the tapes to make him understand why she ends her life.
It follows the most terrible night of her life. At a party she spends a lot of time with Clay. But when he leaves she must watch how a boy rapes another girl. Her body feels so numb that she can’t do anything against what she sees. One week later the same boy rapes Hannah and after that her mind is make up. She only gives a teacher one last chance to help her but he fails. He advises her to move on and get over what happens. So Hannah gives up and ends her life.
- Personal statement
First I thought that the book could be a little bit strange because of the fact that a girl recorded tapes to explain why she killed herself. But the layout made the book also very exciting. I wanted to know what happens in the book. First when I was reading it it was a little bit difficult to switch so often between Clay and Hannah. But nach kurzer Zeit it was no more a problem and then I could hardly stop reading. It was so interesting and fesselnd especially that the book aufwerfen a lot of questions.
The language was easy and Hannahs story was explained very lively. The book made me think a lot of what happened and why it took so much hold of me. I thought about how easy I can affect other peoples life without regognizing it and that such little things can destroy a life. Hannahs story and how she told it made me sad and sometimes angry when I read what the others did to her. I mitleiden with Hannah and also Clay.
I think the theme suicide is an interesting and also very important theme. The theme is aktuell because it’s alltäglich that someone get mobbed or think of suicide. The book shows what realy happens at the schools all over the world. From the book you learn that it’s important to do something against it suicide.
I would really recommend the book especially to people who like serious themes. The easy language and the fact that it plays in school is perfect for young adults. But it’s also very important to see the Ernsthaftigkeit in the book.
