Dear Sir or Madam,
my name is … and I recently completed my A-Levels at the „…“ in … . Your Bachelor-programme for European Studies has caught my eye while I was doing my research for studies and it immediately got my attention.
Europe, and within Europe the European Union, is a project for peace with the objective of a less need for military force in the world, based on the values of freedom, tolerance and democracy. Different countries with different cultures and traditions are coming closer. They trade with each other and try to solve problems together. But the EU is not only a project for peace but one, that also wants to create a better world for all. With the EU enlargement to the East and the integration of Eastern Central Europe in the political system and the economy of Western Europe we are breaking the ground to the world’s largest economic zone where everyone can have an untroubled life. It is a win-win situation for all states being concerned. From my point of view the European Union’s enlargement to the East is our chance to pacify Eastern Europe and to create new bonds between the West and the East.
For me, as a kind of person, who loves values like peace, tolerance and solidarity, it would be wonderful to spend my time, studying the different fields of Europe like its culture or politics and later on, to work professionally in the european sector, dealing with those issues again and supporting a project of peace like the EU. Studying „European Studies“ could fulfil my desire, because I would get the possibility to learn a lot about its culture, economy and society. But especially the focus on the Eastern Central Europe integration, is the most interesting part for me by reason that I aquire the knowledge, to help, to get the East of Europe a little bit closer to the West and to close the gaps where they exist.
Furthermore I have a fascination for other countries and culutures. Studying „European Studies“ is my chance to have a closer look on all the different countries with its traditions situated in Europe.
Moreover I would love to learn a third language and to have about half of my lectures in english. My communication skills are already quite good. I have been learning English for about nine years and Spanish for about seven years in school and I even spend even freetime reading, speaking or writing English. English was one of my two advanced courses and I gave private lessons in English to a few pupils in my school. Since three years I started to read only books being written in english. Furthermore I made an english course for two weeks in my summer holidays last year to improve my knowledge and to end the course successfully with an examination testing my english skills called „Europa-Zertifikat“ level C1, with good results. I have the ability to learn a language very fast and it is absolutely no problem for me to learn three languages at the same time. Actually it would be a pleasure.
Since about four years I have a general interest in politics and economy which I tried to deepen while taking part effectually in the business games „StartUp“, where we found or own company, developed marketing strategies and a finance plan, and „POL&IS – Politics and International Security“. In about one week we learned a lot about international politics and problems which we, representing big countries like the USA, needed to solve altogether. As I participated in „POL&IS“ I decided to study something with a political orientation. When „European Studies“ caught my eye, I was convinced immediately that this would be perfect for me and corresponds well with my future plans. I have already learned a lot about the European Union in Political Education, which was the main theme in our class for half a year. It even was one of my four examination subjects, while I was doing my A-Levels, which means, I already gained a lot of knowledge about the EU and its processes.
My teacher and friends appreciate a lot that I am a very friendly and open person. I organise myself quite well which helps me to do a lot of things in a very short period of time. That is why I usually can cope with a task faster than others. In addition, I am not the kind of person who does everything, when there is not enough time anymore and I am very responsible. If I want to reach a special aim, I always do everything I can, to reach it, so I am a very eager kind of person.
Bearing in mind what, on the one hand, my interests in Europe are, and what, on the other hand, your study programme offers me to learn about it, I am very enthusiastic to undertake this challenge. I would be glad to being given the opportunity to study at the „…“ in … and if so, I ensure you that I will work to full potential. I hope to hear from you in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
