Is CACHE.NTF or CACHE.DSK Required on R5 Servers?
Problem:
You have deleted the CACHE.DSK on your Domino R5 server and when the server is restarted, a new CACHE.DSK is not created. If you have a Domino R5 server on an NT server, you can find a CACHE.NTF, but if UNIX based, you cannot find a CACHE.NTF. You did have a CACHE.DSK before you deleted it.
Solution:
The CACHE.DSK was a file created for the workstation in R4 and not for the server. In R5 the CACHE.NTF is included on the CDs for Windows platforms. It is not included on UNIX CDs as there are no clients. The CACHE.DSK does not belong on a server and the reason that it was still included in the Windows platform was because the client is still allowed to be run on the server. When the NLNOTES.EXE is loaded it will create a CACHE.DSK if it is not there.
On UNIX servers, the lack of a cache.ntf makes the creation of a cache.dsk impossible. Any existing cache.dsk files were most likely hold overs from past versions, and they should be removed as they do not belong on servers.
