Pneumonia Reported in Hanoi
17 March 2003
Dear clients,
As many of you know, the incidence of an atypical pneumonia, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), has been reported in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. This form of pneumonia has attracted much media attention due to its quick spread to several countries. In total, there have been approximately 150 cases worldwide, resulting in 9 deaths.
In Vietnam, the situation is as follows. According to reports from Hanoi, the contagion appears to have been halted with no new infections reported recently. Previously, all recent infections had occurred within a hospital environment. Overall, there have been 46 cases reported, with 2 deaths. Although we encourage clients to keep an eye on the situation, we do not feel that excess caution is warranted at this stage. Neither the United States nor Germany has issued any travel advisories relating to this situation at present.
For those who wish to learn more about this form of pneumonia, we recommend that you check the World Health Organization website, which details the currently known symptoms and offers guidance on how to proceed if symptoms develop during travel. (www.who.int/en). We will of course continue to keep you updated on any new developments.
