For a summary, try the old favorite MASTERPLOTS. You might also look at the Shelley book in the Twayne series. For a really short summary, see Clute and Nicholls: The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction: Shelley (with further references). But why don’t You read the book: it is both fun and „enlightning.“
That thing about the golem is to be taken with a grain of salt. Extensive research has been done on the writing of the book, including notes taken that cold summer in Switzerland which indicate what the exact book being read was (actually, it appears to have been a French translation). I like to think, with-out any evidence to back it up, that it was Hoffmann’s „Sandmann“ that motivated Mary–but I have been unable to find any indication that she read the work or had it read to her (I don’t think she read German).
