sorry erstmal vorweg, wenn sich mein Anliegen nicht so sehr mit Sprachwissenschaften beschaeftigt.
Aber ich suche das englische Wort fuer folgende deutsches Wort: „Pruefwesen“
Habe schon alle mir bekannten Woerterbuecher durch, kann es aber nicht genau finden. Gibt es eventuell ein anderes dt. Wort das den Sinn von Pruefwesen trifft und zu dem man eine englische Uebersetzung finden kann?

PS: falls ihr doch noch mehr zu tun haben wollt: was bedeutet der Ausdruck „paint my horse green“? Habe es schon in vielen Liedtexten gehoert, kann mir aber nicht vorstellen, dass da jemand sein Reittier bemalt. Meine Ideen wanderten in Richtung „paint the town red“, bzw. „paint the town green“ am St. Patricks Day =:wink:

Ich weiss nicht, aber Leute wuerden dich verstehen wenn "test studies,„testing studies,“ or „the field of testing studies“ sagen wuerdest. Vielleicht „standards“ or „the field of standards.“

Ein Zusammenhang wäre nicht schlecht gewesen…Kim’s Antwort scheint sich eher auf ein Studiengebiet oder so zu beziehen. Als Tätigkeitsbeschreibung (Firmenabteilung oder so) kann es aber auch genausogut „Inspection and Testing“ sein, ggfs sogar „Calibrating“, wenn es sich speziell auf Analytik bezieht.
Wie immer: ohne Zusammenhang ist vieles möglich

oder : Prüfstelle = testing position
Vermutlich ist „paint the town red“ (auf die Pauke hauen) schon die richtige Richtung.
Habe bisher aber noch keine exate Übersetzung gefunden.

Also hier die Hintergruende: ich habe hier eine Software, bei der ein Menuepunkt Pruefwesen heisst. Die Software unterteutzt die Pruefung und Wartung von Flugzeugen und unter diesem Menuepunkt verbirgt sich alles, was eigentlich zu den Pruefungen gehoert: Formulare, Berechnungen, offizielle Dokumente, etc.

Als Muttersprachler, wuerde ich darunter alles erwarten, das mit Wartung, Service, usw. verbunden ist.
Und jetzt zu dem Punkt green horses. Ich bin so frei, auf Englisch fortzufahren, weil wenn man sich mit englischen Liedertexten beschaeftigt, muss man doch eine Diskussion auf Englisch folgen koennen…und ausserdem muss ich bald den Rasen maehen und auf Englisch geht’s schneller - das hier mit der Antwort, nicht das maehen.
I have never heard anything about green horses except in connection with the Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy arrives in the Emerald City, she sees, among the odd sights, a green horse. (Of course, everything in Emerald City is green.) When she asks about it, she is informed that it is „a horse of a different color“ or maybe it is „the horse of a different color.“ The phrase „a horse of a different color“ is of course an English idiom meaning something along the lines of „das ist was anders.“ But I wouldn’t look for any meaning in the song there. In the Wizard of Oz, it is just a bad joke - unless a good Freudian can make something else out of it. Anyway, I looked up the text to the Bates’ song „I paint my horse green“ and I don’t find a lot there that makes much sense to me at all. (Gee, do you think the song might have something to do with being under the influence of a drug or alcohol?)…but I expect that the conclusion that they think they should have painted the horse black instead of green would have some meaning in a punk, nihilistic, head slamming sort of way. Especially since they seem to have named themselves after the Bate’s Motel of „Psycho“ and have a nice song about Norman Bates, the matricidal, homicidal maniac. And also since each site that is concerned with the Bates and their music has chosen a black background. (By now it must be obvious that I have no idea who the hell the Bates are. I intend to keep it that way.) I suspect, in essence, that trying to analyze the song will get you less understanding about them than just jumping into the mosh pit and drawing blood. (I could make some sort of argument about the Wizard of Oz and childhood innocence and the black despair of reality, but I think I will go mow the lawn instead.)
