remember the TV-series „The Thornbirds“ with Richard
Chamberlain and Rachel Ward, Jean Simmons and Barabara
Stanwyck and Christopher Plummer, playing in Australia?

The farm of the main characters in Australia was named
„Drogheda“ (after the Irish town) and they (I am
talking about the English original) pronounced it
„Dro-cheda“. Short o, very gutteral ch and almost neutral
vowel at the end.

At the time there was a lot of fuss about the wrong
pronunciation.

DROGHEDA ?

*g* I always think of exactly the same thing as Elke just did!!!

Dro -he -da

dro - offenes o, like in ‚on‘, ‚oven‘

he- silent e, like the French would pronounce the letter ‚e‘

da - kurzes a, like a baby going ‚dadada‘

The g in a gh is silent in Irish - try to pronounce the surname
Geoghegan!

In this combination it aint just the g that’s silent; the name is
actually pronounced ‚Gagan‘ (=‚Gaygan‘ in terms of sound).

Thanks so much for the great help. I like the way local people pronounce it, as somebody has pointed out, namely,
DRAWDA . That sounds very Irish to me!

Nachdem dir aus dem fernen Deutschland so gründliche Hilfe zuteil
wurde und du nun darüber Bescheid weisst, wie man den irischen
Ortsnamen Drogheda ausspricht,
sag’ mir doch bitte, wie dein Pseudonym „hairy arse“ ins Deutsche
zu übersetzen wäre. :wink:)

Und was den ganzen Nick betrifft, so hat er das auch
schon mal erklärt, aber da ich nicht nach Namen suchen kann,
finde ich den Thread nicht mehr.
Aus dem Gedächtnis zitiert:
Bei einem Besuch von Queen Elizabeth in Australien wurde sie
von einem Aborigine ge-„mooned“ (also er streckte ihr den
nackischen A… entgegen). Die englische Presse hat daraufhin
den Unbekannten „HHA“ getauft.
