Toilet outside the flat, Mainz, Kästrich?

Hi there, I am moving to Mayence in a couple of weeks and am now looking for an apartment…as I am only moving over for a couple of months it is quite hard to find a plce to stay.

I now found a potential home in Mayence, Kaestrich,…which sounds great. The only thing is that they told me the toilet wouldn’t be in the actual flat which I find a bit strange…is this something you would find quite often in this area? It is an old building…does anybody know he area and the neighbourhood?

Thanks for your help and your experience…

Dena

Hi Dena

In General KÄSTRICH is a good place to stay. Quiet, but only a 5 minutes walk to the center of the city and a few minutes by car to the major highways. But you can find 2 types of flat: Top redecorated flats in the old style, (but) with sometimes overproportional rates or very old appartments still in a bad condition (but cheap).

Toilet not in the flat should mean category 2 - and to be honoust it’s very unusal in this area to find such appartments (I know these flats from my childhood  )

So at least be careful…

To find an appartment difficult? Depends on yr budget and if your focus is the city center or surrounding villages. The link below (on german) gives you a good overview about offert appartments in the area.

If you are interested I could take a picture of the building (Kästrich) - if you send me the adress (and yr email adress).

all the best

Dear Dena,

I don’t know Mainz-Kästrich, but a toilet outside the flat is something you do not find very often in Germany anymore. People used to have toilets outside their flats 50 years ago, but today that is not the usual standard anymore. If the house is very old, it may still be the case but I would advise you to have a look at the flat before you move in because it may not have been renovated for a long time if it does not even have its own toilet.

Best wishes and have a great time in Mainz!
Gwen

Helle Dena,

it’s very nice over there and quite close to the centrum. You’ll not find very often that the toilet is separated but sometimes in old buildings. I hope that you will find a nice appartment because Mainz is a very nice town.

Hi Dena,

First of all: Welcome to Mainz!

About your question: Appartments with an external toilet are not standard in Mainz. But there are some, especially in older buildings.

Generally, it is quite hard to find an appartment in Mainz and the rents are high. Although Kaestrich is a rather good quarter in the city center, there are as well some really old buildings with very low standards. Some landlords don’t renovate their houses because there are always a lot of students who need a cheap place to stay and take anything they’re offered - especially at a time like now, when the new semester begins.

I’m afraid this will be not a very comfortable place you are offered here. But nice and cheap appartments in Mainz are hard to find - especially when you have no possibility to look for them directly in town.

If you get another offer for an other appartment, choose it. But it is quite possible that there are not a lot of good appartments on the market anymore now that the semester has just begun.

I wish you good luck!

Alice

Hi there, thanks you so much…that is a really helpful answer. The correct address is Kaestrich 2B and yes, it does be an old house…but it seems that the rent is cheap and I’m only there for 7 weeks, so I don’t really care about decoration and all that…if you happen to pass this place do take a picture, that would be great. My e-mail is [email protected]…maybe also have a look if there are other people living in it…if you can find out…

Best regards,

Dena

Hi!

Hi there, I am moving to Mayence in a couple of weeks and am
now looking for an apartment…as I am only moving over for a
couple of months it is quite hard to find a plce to stay.

Mainz (in German, Mayence is French) is - thanks to the catholic church that owns neary 2/3 of the city - one of the most expensive towns in Germany despite the fact that the population is 200,000 only.
The cheapest flats you find in Mainz-Kostheim and sometimes Mainz Kastel, on the other side of the Rhine and now belonging to the city of Wiesbaden.

I now found a potential home in Mayence, Kaestrich,…which
sounds great. The only thing is that they told me the toilet
wouldn’t be in the actual flat which I find a bit strange…is
this something you would find quite often in this area?

Due to the fact that Mainz was nearly completely destroyed in 1945 there are only a few old buildings left. I think it’s an old cavalry barrack at the Langenbeckstrasse. These old buildings were converted to flats and I think there’s one of the few buildings with no toilet inside the flat. Nevertheless, despite the lovely area, the Langenbeckstrasse (next to the University Hospital) is quite loud due to traffic (cars ambulances and an emergency helicopter).

I live in Mainz for up to 30 years now, but I never lived in a flat without a toilet… So it is definitly not common!
Only in the old parts of some German cities, that were not destroyed in WW2 like Wiesbaden and Marburg you can find sometimes flats (old working class homes) without own toilets and they are made in the late 19th century.

It is
an old building…does anybody know he area and the
neighbourhood?

The Kästrich is one of the best places to live in Mainz. It’s quite near to downtown and there are lovely and wide parks you can walk in.
Only some „forrest“ parts (Kapellenstrasse) of Gonsenheim (though there are very poor quarters too, the „skyscrapers“ in the Elsa-Brandström-Strasse e. g.) and Drais are as „good“ (=expensive) areas as the Kästrich. I live in Mombach, a part of Mainz that isn’t as nice as the areas mentioned above - it’s like a village of its own, but it is the old working class outskirt of Mainz and in fact the cheapest part in town to live.

Hope that helps -

Thanks for your help and your experience…

You’re welcome and enjoy your stay in Germany!

Hi there, thanks a million for that answer…it does be a bit strange all that but I hope it turns out ok…

Thanks very much…for some reason all your answers are not very encouraging…

OK well…at least the area is nice…ha ha ha

Waw that was loads of information…thanks very much…

Hi Dena,

are you sure you´re talking about Kästrich? Not, for instance, Kastel?
Because Kästrich is said to be a very good and posh area of appartments…

From my flat to the Kästrich Area, its abou 100 meters. If you want, I may go there and check the adress from the ouside… (what kind of house etc). Think about it, and if yes, send me the street name and house number.
Greetings from Mainz
Sandra

It is Kaestrich 2B…for sure…I got somebody else to check it already…thanks again…if you pass it do have a look at let me knw what your opinion is…the more opinions the better…so far I have only heard negative things :frowning:
