Example: For breakfast, they had dry bread and tea.

That is, bread goes stale the older it gets - you know, harder & horrible. If I buy a roll that’s been lying in some display case all day, yes, the edges will be horribly stale.

Not quite sure what the Ami would say but I would say:
‚the sandwich/roll was a bit on the dry side.‘
Stale bread is old bread. A stale sandwich is a sandwich which was made some time ago.

thanks a lot for your answers.
I have to describe a snack. There was this roll, ok, but not very delicious. It was not old so i think „stale“ is to hard.
The Meal was not bad and a answer like „old“ would be unfair.
At the moment i prefer the answer of minnie, „… a bit on the dry side“.
Anybody who can agree with me

sorry, but that’s what you’re talking about.
My sandwich was a little dry = if anybody used that at all, I would think that whatever ingredients were in it were too dry, ie no mayonnaise, relish, salads etc to make it edible.
If you’re referring to the bread itself, see above…
But, if it’s not your native language, you’ll be forgiven for describing it whichever way you want to.

Yes, or I would say: This roll is rather dry.
I certainy would not use stale.

das Brot war nicht alt, sondern das Sandwich war zu trocken. Ich weiß ja nicht, wie man das in Irland ausdrückt, aber ich lebe seit 22 Jahren in Australien und hier würde man entweder sagen: ‚the sandwich was rather dry‘ oder ‚the sandwich was a bit on the dry side‘
oder ‚the sandwich was too dry‘.
