SUMMARY

The following steps allow you to backup your system state data to a local hard
drive, these files include your registry files for your computer.

Backup Windows 2000 Registry and System State Data

There are two steps to backup the registry and system state data. First you must
create a folder to store the files and then complete the backup. One of the
important steps to remember is that you will create a folder annamed systemstate
to store your system state containing the registry.

To create a new folder:

  1. Log on as an administrator or backup group operator.

  2. Right- click the Start button, click Explore.

  3. Click on the Local Disk (C:smile: to highlight it.

  4. Click File on the menu bar, select New, then click Folder. Name the new
    folder as systemstate.

NOTE: You have now created a local folder named \systemstate for storage of
system state files.

Backup System State Data

  1. Click Start, select Programs, select System Tools, select Accessories, then
    click Backup.

  2. Click Backup Wizard from the Backup and Recovery Tools screen.

  3. Click Next from the Welcome to the Windows 2000 Backup and Recovery Tools
    page.

  4. Click the Option Button to select Only Back Up the System State data from the
Backup Wizard, What to Backup screen, then click Next.

  5. Type c:\systemstate in the box that is titled Backup media or file name, then
    click Next.

  6. Click Finish from the Backup Wizards, Completing the Backup Wizard page. The
system state data is backed up to the c:\systemstate folder.

NOTE: The system state data is composed of the following files:

  • The Registry.

  • Boot files containing system files and files protected by Windows File
    Protection (WFP).

  • Active Directory (domain controllers only).

  • Sysvol (domain controllers only).

  • Certificate Services (on certification only).

  • Cluster database (on a cluster node only).

  • Performance computer configuration information.

  • Component Services Class registration database.

Troubleshooting

  • It is possible to backup the registry to floppy disks, however the process
could take a minimum of two hours for just System State data. Therefore it is
not fast enough to be of practical use.

  • The system state backup will backup the registry as well as other system
criticial files. You cannot choose to backup and restore individual
components due to dependencies among system components.

  • You must be logged on as an adminsitrator or group operator to back up files
    or folders.

  • You can backup the system state data only to your local computer not to a
    remote computer.
