Hallo,
nach einem nvidia-update mit smart startete zunächst der XServer nicht mehr. Das habe ich durch Deinstallation und Neuinstallation des nvidia-Treiber wieder hingekriegt. Leider fehlen die Fensterdekos (Verschieben, Verkleinern, Schließen, …).
Die Deinstallation von xgl und compiz und deren Neuinstallation hat leider nicht geholfen.
Jetzt weiß ich nicht, wie ich weiter vorgehen könnte.
Weiß jemand Rat?
System: Suse 10.2 64Bit (2.6.18), Gnome, XGL, compiz

Das iat mir auch passiert, hier in Folge einer Beryl- (also quasi compiz) Installation. War etwas holprig zu beheben: Unter Ubuntu 7.04 gibt es „desktop-effects“, welches mit dem OS mitkommt, ohne Beryl o.ä. installieren zu müssen. Als ich hier mal beherzt die Effekte de- und wieder aktiviert hatte, war alles wieder da. Kann auch sein, dass ich das mehrfach machte, ich war leicht panisch

Hm, schade. Ich habe mal etwas im Netz gesucht: Zumindest kommt dieses Problem oft vor. Es kann z.B. mit Deiner Grafikkarte zusammenhängen, siehe hier:

Vielleicht musst Du den aktuellsten Treiber installieren.

Danke für Deine Recherche. Dieser User hatte jedoch das Fraktalproblem, welches ich auch hatte, aber mit der Einstellung „HWCursor“ „On“ auch schon gelöst hatte. Es liegt auch nicht am Nvidia-Treiber.
Wenn ich nur wüsste, wie man den Windowmanager manuell starten kann. Dann hätte ich vielleicht eine Fehlermeldung. Der XServer funktioniert gut.
Wenn ich Gnome im abgesicherten Modus starte, wird der Windowmanager korrekt mitgestartet.

Also:
Grafisch muss man zwei Dinge unterscheiden: 1. den XServer, der für die grafische Anzeige zuständig ist und 2. den Fenstermanager, der für die Fensterbearbeitung zuständig.
Da das Problem nicht an xgl, compiz oder am nvidia-Treiber lag, fragte ich mich, wie man denn den fehlenden Fenstermanager manuell starten kann, wo er nicht automatisch gestartet wird.
Also geschaut: Wikipedia -> Fenstermanager -> Gnome verwendet Metacity, kann aber auch etliche andere verwenden.
Metacity deinstalliert und wieder installiert -> Rechner neu gestartet und siehe da: Geht nicht.
Shell aufgemacht und Metacity eingegeben und Metacity wurde fehlerfrei gestartet.
Beim Abmelden „Einstellungen speichern“ angehakt -> fertig.
Fenstermanager ist wieder da 
Das sind Momente, da ich mich über Linux freue. Gar nicht so schwer, wenn man weiß, wie es geht
