Wrong - unless you want to say that any sort of German accent is a case of correctly producing the required sounds. In my opinion, the overwhelming majority of students show some sort of influence of their mother tongue on the pronunciation of the foreign language. However, if „close“ resp. „recognizable“ is close enough, then this statement would cover the majority.
You said it’s the other way round. You seem to think I said that EVERYBODY can be taught how to produce sounds correctly.
I do not think that at all and have never thought it. I am surprised you gained this impression after I had told you about how all our students have a German accent when they speak English…
I didn’t say that and I didn’t mean than. I thought my response to your example had made that clear.

This may be true für most consonants, but is certainly impossible for vowel sounds (incl. diphthongs).
The only mistake I have made is using the example of a particularly hopeless case.
Du hast schon mal meine Schulkenntnisse erweitert. Ich dachte bislang wirklich, am EE-ther erkenne ich den Amerikaner.
Jetzt weiß ich, dass es nicht so ist. Da spielt es jetzt nur noch eine untergeordnete Rolle, wie die Iren das aussprechen.
Seitdem Du gefragt hast, habe ich viel drüber nachgedacht. Wann sage ich „EE“ und wann sage ich „EYE“?! Finde ich selber interessant.
Manchmal rede ich, wie gesagt, einfach nach Gefühl und Laune und verwende beide Möglichkeiten. ABER…was mir aufgefallen ist: wenn das Wort am Anfang kommt (z.B. Either you tidy your room or I’ll take away your iPod, neither blue nor green) dann sage ich „EE“.
Sonst finde ich kein Muster.
Gestern waren leider kaum Kollegen in der Firma und die Amis waren nicht erreichbar. Ich werde trotzdem bei Gelegenheit fragen, weil es mich auch interessiert.
