ich dachte ich wüsste schon alles über moderne Kommunikation, aber anscheinend ist dem noch nicht so… kann mir jemand grob erklären, was das ist? ich weiß wohl was diskussionsforen sind aber von newsgroups hab ich noch nie was gehört…

Konzept und Inhalt sind grob der gleiche. In beiden werden um einen gewissen Themenkreis Diskussionen geführt oder Informationen ausgetauscht. Früher, als alles noch nicht so bunt und hip war, und Onlinezeit richtig Geld gekostet hat, waren solche Plattformen als Newsgroups organisiert. Technisch funktioniert da die Kommunikation per E-Mail. Genauer ist es hier

NNTP. Die Email-Protokolle sind da völlig außen vor. Vielleicht verwechselst du das mit Mailinglisten.

News werden über typischerweise im „Usenet“ gelesen und heutzutage meist per Internet übertragen, aber andere Übertragungswege sind durchaus etabliert.

Du beziehst Dich vermutlich auf den Satz „Technisch wird für Newsgroup-Beiträge das Format von E-Mails verwendet, wobei lediglich einige weitere Typen von Header-Zeilen eingeführt wurden.“? Der ist wirklich schlecht formuliert. Vielleicht sollte ich mir mal tatsächlich eine bessere Formulierung einfallen lassen (Sonntag kannst Du mich gerne nocheinmal daran erinnern.
Aber News und Mail hat ersteinmal wirklich nicht allzuviel miteinander zu tun. RFC 977 („Network News Transfer Protocol“) sagt dazu:
1.1. Internet Mailing Lists
The Internet community distributes news by the use of mailing lists.
These are lists of subscriber's mailbox addresses and remailing
sublists of all intended recipients. These mailing lists operate by
remailing a copy of the information to be distributed to each
subscriber on the mailing list. Such remailing is inefficient when a
mailing list grows beyond a dozen or so people,
[...]
1.2. The USENET News System
Clearly, a worthwhile reduction of the amount of these resources used
can be achieved if articles are stored in a central database on the
receiving host instead of in each subscriber's mailbox. The USENET

Das, was der Wikipedia-Autor vermutlich meint ist folgendes: Mail nutzt das „Internet Message Format“ (definiert in RFC 2822, ein Nachfolger von RFC 822), RFC 1036 (" Standard for Interchange of USENET Messages") bezieht sich darauf und sagt:

The primary consideration in choosing a message format is that it
fit in with existing tools as well as possible. Existing tools
include implementations of both mail and news. (The notesfiles
system from the University of Illinois is considered a news
implementation.) A standard format for mail messages has existed

Daraus zu folgern, Newsgroupsliefen per Mail ab, ist schlicht und einfach falsch.
