General information

No other canyon impresses more to the viewer than the Colorado River canyons in northern Arizona but through countless pictures no canyon is as well known as the Grand Canyon.

The park includes 1904 square miles / 4931 square km.
Most people measure the canyon in Colorado River miles.
By that standard, the Grand Canyon is 277 miles / 446 km long and has an average depth of 1600 metres.
It starts at Lees Ferry and ends at Grand Wash Cliffs.
The Colorado River is longer than Grand Canyon, flowing 1,450 miles / 2,333 km from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to the Gulf of California in Mexico.
The Grand Canyon is only one of many beautiful canyons carved by the river.
Most people agree, however, that Grand Canyon is the most spectacular.
No other place in the world looks quite like it.

The Grand Canyon is still one of the best known and most popular attractions in the United States.
Every year, four million people visit the Grand Canyon National Park.
The majority of this visit the better developed South Rim, while the least visit the natural part of the Grand Canyon the North Rim.
In high seasons, the South Rim is often crowded. So much that parking could be a problem
To stop this problem, the number of visitors is limited.
The most visitors only stop at the famous viewpoints and take short walks along the rims.
But the right appreciation you can only understand when you walk inside the Grand Canyon.
You can reach the rugged shores of the Colorado River over several well developed paths down.

A new attraction at the Grand Canyon West has opened in 2006, the Skywalk.
It is a glass bridge at a height of nearly 1300 meters. This is almost three times higher than the Sears Tower in Chicago.
On the Skywalk, you can see the Colorado River 1200 meters below in the Central Valley but 2 kilometres away.
Access is initially on a temporary tunnel, and later by the Visitor Center, which is scheduled for completed in early 2007. The trip from Las Vegas lasts about 2 1/2 hours.

The majority of these visitors, tourists visit the better developed (inwiefern „better developed“?)South Rim,

therefore the number of visitors is limited (restricted).

But only when you

History

about 1000 BC

Indians (native Americans!) already lived as hunters and gatherers in the area of
the Grand Canyon.

about 0 AD

The Anasazi lived in this area. They lived in mud huts.
The Anasazi disappeared at around 1300 AD.
The Hopi and other Indian peoples populated the area too.
Today, the Havasupai Indians (und andere, gehört soweit ich weiss zum grossen reservat) live in the area of the Grand
Canyon.

1540 AD

The first time the Grand Canyon was visited by Europeans (naja, ein spanischer Abenteurer …),
however, 200 years long nobody was interested in it because it was
considered worthless. Worthlessness erklären!

About 1850 AD

Settlers came to this area. Was für Settler?

24th May 1879

John Wesley Powell went (was für Boote, Ruder Kajak, Segel, Dampf? with 4 wooden boats to the Green
River.
After 1500 miles and countless current thresholds, the

2 years later, he mapped the Grand Canyon on a new journey.
He also gave his name to the Grand Canyon.

11th January 1908

U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declared the area

a National Monument.

26th February 1919

The Grand Canyon finally became a national park.

Hi,

tut mir Leid.

Viel Erfolg!
